Dear friends,

 

I was reminded at last week's meeting of why we join Rotary, and how we continually 'do good on the world.'

 

Lyn Stubbs spoke to us about assisting the homeless, and rough sleepers, throughout our district. The stories are brutal, but the impact of people like Lyn, in supporting people who live on the streets, can make a difference. This impact will be felt almost immediately by our donated items, which included shoes, blankets, sleeping bags and clothes. Unfortunately, we can't help everyone, but donating to help those we don't know, is a truly 'service above self'.

 

We also heard from Ken about the very successful Rotary Kids Fun Run and then presented Eastern Health with a cheque for $39,000. Since our first event in 2002, our club, through this event, has raised $851,250 for various children's charities and organisations. The philosophy of 'kids helping kids' is a message that resonates with everyone throughout our community. To everyone that worked on this event, and every event since 2002, I am deeply grateful. To our sponsors, partners and suppliers, we couldn't do this without your continued support and I look forward to meeting all of you when we have the official unveiling of the artwork at the Angliss Hospital in the not to distant future. 

 

Ian Ash also updated us on the preliminary financial results of the Gembrook Classic & Custom Car show. Initial results show a profit of ~$10,000 from revenue of ~$18,000. As this is a major fundraiser for our club, this is an excellent achievement, of which Ian, and his committee should be very proud. If any member would like to work on the committee, please feel free to contact Ian.

 

Last Thursday, our inaugural Emerald Secondary College Interact Club had their first meeting, consisting of 18 students from Years 7-10. The club is well supported by the college, with Melinda providing extraordinary guidance and assistance to the members. It's importance to also recognise the work that Marcus, Gloria and their associated Youth committees have done over the past couple of years to finally have an Interact club in our community. Well done to everyone on a fabulous achievement.

 

This coming Tuesday, our special guest is Councillor David Nickell, so please come along to hear what he has to say. David is a great supporter of our club and the work that we do.
