SUE MCiver - fernlea house

We welcomed guest speaker Sue McIver from Fernlea House to our meeting.  She provided insights as follows:
  • Established 2004/5 have looked after 1000 people since then.  Jason Wood helped to ensure initial funding.
  • 2015 funding model changes - only aged care therefore only over 65 yrs of age could be looked after so they have set up 'Fernlea Community Care' to include Fernlea House and Fernlea Shop of Opportunity and Fernlea In-home Care to add a commercial arm to assist funding of those under 65 who need the services of the house
  • Their approach is holistic and focuses on normality so residents are not defined by their illness
  • The aim is to improve quality of live for residents
  • They have 80 volunteers undertaking varying roles depending on their skills and interest
  • The Chef works hard to provide food that triggers memories
  • The Future - setting up a carer's support group and a home visiting service for those in the final stages of life.
