Closing remarks

Duncan provided a brief history of the rinks in Melbourne including the Glaciarum, Dandenong, St Moritz in St Kilda, Oakleigh, Footescray and Ringwood where he started skating and trained.

He provided information on the types of skaters:
  • Single – short and free program
  • Pair
  • Ice Dancing
  • Sychronised Skating are the types of figure skating disciplines

Duncan’s journey into the world of ice skating began at the Ringwood club, where he was captivated after participating in Christmas shows. Ringwood was known as a powerhouse in the sport, boasting numerous champions, including five-time Olympian Cameron Medhurst. Throughout his career, Duncan partnered with notable figures such as Lynn Webb and Sandy Kerry, contributing to his extensive experience on the ice.

The landscape of ice dancing underwent a significant transformation with the performance of Torvill and Dean at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. Their groundbreaking routine broke conventional rules and defied expectations, leading them to receive perfect 6.0 scores across the board. This shift raised questions about the fairness of judging in competitive skating, marking the beginning of a transformative era in the sport.

During this time, athletes served lengthy apprenticeships, honing their skills and preparing for the rigors of competition. The contrast between past and present is stark, particularly evident in the 2004 Olympic Games, where champions showcased remarkable advancements in speed and choreography, executing lifts and turns at speeds of 20 to 40 kilometers per hour. As the sport evolved, the judging system also became increasingly complex and significant.

The sport faced its share of controversies, notably surrounding the infamous rivalry between Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, which highlighted the pressures athletes faced. Additionally, doping challenges emerged, making it crucial for competitors to remain vigilant about what they were consuming.

Initially, ice dancing was viewed primarily as an art form, but as the sport evolved, it has been recognized for its athletic demands, blending both art and sport. The integration of sports science and psychology proved to be a game changer during Duncan’s competitive years, enhancing training and performance.

Duncan’s accolades include being named Australian Junior Champion in 1985, 1986, and 1992. His dedication extended beyond his own skating as he contributed to the development of future talents during his coaching stints, guiding several athletes through to international competitions while participating in an was senior campion from 1989, 1990 and again from 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994.
