Hi everyone
Firstly, I would like to thank all my Rotary family for giving me such a wonderful birthday with phone calls, emails, messages, balloons, flowers, bottles and an impromptu performance on my front door step by the Spangles who came fully prepared with umbrellas, sound system and microphone. I heard them before they even arrived, so no idea what the neighbours thought. And then another celebration at the meeting with everyone wearing hats and Roy bringing me a banana cake.  As Marcus commented - just wait until I am 50 next year!       
 
 
 
 
Club Assembly night saw all Committees brain storming and it sounds like there are a few interesting projects being contemplated. The Youth “Care Bags” are progressing well and will be a better quality of product than last year thanks to the generosity of Club members purchasing additional items with their weekly shop. It is even looking as though they will be able to make up Year 6 bags. The Membership team are to take up on the offer from Alma Reynolds and the D9810 Membership team (which includes our own Ian Ash) to attend a special workshop which will demonstrate a proven process to increase member numbers. 
 
Due to all the hard work and time spent on producing the 40 Years of Service booklet, it was a shame that Russ Nielsen was unable to attend on Tuesday as he would have been heartened to hear that new member Tracey Bannister has already read all 121 pages and did so in 2.5 hours. That was a fine that I was happy to pay for as I only dropped off the USB last week.
 
Wednesday’s earthquake was a real shock to everyone and I hope that none of the members sustained any damage.  It makes you wonder what else is going to be added to our list of happenings – COVID lockdown, curfews and Major storm. If nothing else it makes us pull together and become creative.
 
Regrettably the Federal Government will still not allow ROMAC to bring children into Australia or New Zealand. However, they have around 40 patients on their waiting list who will be treated as soon as possible once border closures are lifted.
 
Next week, DG Daryl Moran and his wife Jenny will attend the Club Meeting. Daryl says he is a man of few words so I am only to allow 45 minutes for him.  It would be good if you can attend this meeting as I am sure you will find it interesting. Time allowing, I plan to add a continuous Round Robin.

  • A new fundraising idea in the works – watch this space

Youth Committee – PP PHF Tina McInerney

  • Explaining to Tracey
  • Speech competition cancelled
    • DGE PP PHF Ken Miller – talk to Michael Hardy Speech Competition on line – decision TBC
  • Year 12 bags will not cost a lot this year, thank you to everyone for their donations
  • RYLA very important to our club – school not interested at this stage (will chat to Belgrave and Monbulk to get someone for RYLA).Gayle Barrot has someone to recommend and will contact Tina.Participants receive $950 in a grant

International Committee – PP PHF Ian Ash

  • Sponsorship pushed to early 2022
  • Great that Greg Adams has come on board, will bring 2 projects with him, but one of them Tenderfoot School we are making an allocation there and people in the club may want to make personal contributions (no pressure)
  • Running Out of Poverty – 2016 training program for kids with potential in the Philippines.Asked Greg to talk to club about RUPE

Community Service – PP PHF Emma Clark

  • District Project – Rescue our logs.Timber has to dry for a year so will be coming down the line
  • Book written about the storm
  • Project – primary schools art on wood with an indigenous feel
  • We as a club would like to support – generators/difilators – Emergency kits from the $102k
  • Heal the Hills – Rotary driving later this year or early next year
  • Lot of stuff coming up regarding

Ditch paper towels for compostable sponges. Paper towel is convenient, yes. But the more you think about it, the less sense it makes. Why on earth would you keep chopping down trees when dishcloths, tea towels, and even mops can simply rinse and repeat? Our grandmothers would turn in their graves (or, since mine is still alive, shake her walking stick at me in disgust) at the prospect of creating so much senseless waste.
Even if it’s milled from sustainable timber.
 
However, if you do still want something handy you can quickly grab to effortlessly clean up messes, a growing number of companies are manufacturing compostable cleaning supplies.
 
Seed and Sprout,   https://seedsprout.com.au based in Byron Bay, makes cellulose dishcloths that can replace your paper towel and grotty kitchen sponge in one fell swoop. They can absorb up to 20 times their own weight in liquid, be chucked in the washing machine, and used for about three to six months before you can retire them in the compost.”
 
A Game for a rainy day :)
 
How about the following on a rainy day.  Choose to play against someone and do the following.  Pick a book with solid text at random from the shelf.  Your opponent then tells you a random page number and a starting line ( eg. Page 83, line 17). You then have ten wickets to obtain your total score. Every letter has a value, so there are no “dot” balls To speed things up. 
 
Letters have one run apart from the following.
 
A and E. are 2 runs each
 
I. is 3
O is 4
U is six
 
Now for the wickets
 
B is bowled
C is caught
L is lbw
X is out hit wicket
Y is run out
Z is stumped
 
N is a no ball
W is a wide
