G’day everyone and welcome to another exciting Rotary week!!
What a week it has been!  Giving away cars, cooking up a storm at the Dig In Cafe and sizzling sausages like we’ve never sizzled before!  Now we find ourselves at a different meeting location for a couple of weeks…Zest Cafe!  Many thanks to Alison and team for inviting us here and opening their doors for an evening event.
The presentation of the prizes for The Great Community Raffle at Ferntree Gully Motors was very well attended and from all accounts, was a successful night.  My personal thanks to John Shaw who gave a Rotary Spiel on my behalf as my mum was suddenly admitted to hospital that afternoon.  I heard on the Rotary Wheel that it was a enjoyable event, well organised and not too late.  ;)
By the time we all read this edition of Sparkle, we will have cooked hundreds of snags on Saturday.  I’m looking forward to hearing all about it this week….but not looking forward to the everlasting smell of sausage grease in my hair…
SUNSHINE LADY!
Our newly appointed Sunshine Lady is Lyn Beckwith.  If you hear of a member, or someone connected to our club who might be ill or in need a bit of support with something, Lyn’s your lady!  Please let Lyn & I know if you think we can help brighten his/her day!
REMEMBER!!
We are unable to meet at the current location after the 20th August.  The pub has been sold and the new owners are doing renovations which will take at least 2 weeks.
3rd Sept     ZEST cafe in Emerald  (usual time)
10th Sept    ZEST cafe in Emerald  (usual time)
17th Sept    To Be Confirmed - depends on renovations
EXCITING NEWS!!!
The Fun’raising committee have been able to secure a date and time for a Polio fundraiser film at the Cameo Cinema, Belgrave.  “Ride Like a Girl,” to be shown as a prerelease special on Friday 20th September at 6pm.  Tickets are $20 per person and funds go to the End Polio Now campaign.  As we know, we are This Close to eradicating polio.  Please spread the word and sell, sell, sell!!
See you round like a Rotary Wheel!!
Hooroo for now

Conundrum of the week….
Assuming that you are paying, is it cheaper to take one friend to the movies twice, or two friends to the movies at the same time?  (It doesn’t matter how much popcorn they eat!!!)

Last Week's Meeting

great community raffle celebration

Great Community Raffle Winner Announced!

At a wonderful 10th anniversary celebration evening on 27 August, the winners of the Great Community Raffle were announced.

1st prize Nissan Qashai - Peter Smith
2nd prize $1000 Westfield voucher - Chelsea Fletcher
3rd prize $ 500 Westfield voucher - Mitchell Family

The winner of the car took proud ownership and celebrated alongside his wife, Nick Wakeling, MLA, State Member for Ferntree Gully, long-time raffle organiser Scott Embling from Ferntree Gully Motors and Dealer Principal Wayne Stevenson.

This is an amazing opportunity for clubs to raise funds for themselves with 100% of funds raised going back to their organisations thanks to the generosity this year of Ferntree Gully Nissan.

Since its inception in 2009 the Great Community Raffle has raised over $1,557,800 for the local community, with just shy of $170k raised this year alone.

Thank you to the team at Ferntree Gully Motors and our club member in Lorna Shaw who did so much hard work to ensure the organisational success within the Rotary Club of Emerald and District that organises the raffle with Ferntree Gully Motors!

Wishing winner Peter many hours of comfortable driving :)

SAUSAGE SIZZLE A GREAT SUCCESS

Thank you to everyone who rostered on for the sausage sizzle at Emerald Village Meats on Saturday.  The sizzle raised  $284.25 which is just terrific.  Just as important is the connection this provides with the local community.

In the spirit of the 2019 theme “Rotary Connects the World”, the event provided a good opportunity for members to chat with local residents, workers and visitors to the area about how Rotary connects the local community through its major events and other fund-raising activities.

As always, we extend a hugh thank you to Alan for supplying the delicious sausages.

Conundrum Answer - It’s cheaper to take two friends at the same time.  In this case, you would only be buying three tickets, whereas if you take the same friend twice you are buying four tickets.

Rotary Toast

To Australia and the people of Australia (toast) To Rotary International (toast)

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free;

We've golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.

Conundrum Answer:

“Halfway.  Since we have no idea how large the woods are, the distance in actual measurement becomes irrelevant.  At the halfway point the dog will be running OUT of the woods!"
