Sparkle Vol 40 #8 - 20 August 2019 (Aug 20, 2019)

G’day everyone and welcome to another fun-filled week!!

Last week’s meeting was filled with fabulous chatter and ideas flowing from committees!

John McGleer and friends from the John Mc Foundation which works closely with homeless people, donated 17 boxes of toys for the showbags for KFRWT - and offered us an ongoing supply of 4l containers of ice-cream, which, alas, we had to decline!! Lol! He was interested in hearing about the Dig In Cafe though and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of that ice-cream ended up being served there. ;)

Our newest member, Ros Weadman, gave a very enlightening Behind The Badge talk with a very impressive powerpoint presentation which showed how her passion for animals, life and work all merge together to create, what seems to be, a very “sweet spot.” She introduced us to the Japanese concept of Ikigai…which according to Google is…

A new concept on the secret of a happy life.Ikigai (pronounced ee-key-guy) is a wonderful Japanese concept that essentially means “a reason for being.” It's made from two Japanese words: iki, meaning “life” and kai, meaning “effect, result, worth or benefit.”Something definitely worth contemplating as we go about our busy lives.

Thank you to Nicole from the Paradise Pub and Marcus for following up, the new owners are more than happy to have us continue to meet in “our room” and in fact, plan to do some upgrades to it as well. We don’t know details of meal prices etc as yet, but hopefully Marcus & I will be able to meet with them soon to sort all that out! As they say in the classics, “watch this space!”

Please note that we are unable to meet at the current location after our meeting on the 20th August. The pub has been sold and the new owners are doing renovations which will take at least 2 weeks.

This week will see Charlotte Read come back to visit us. She will also be our Guest Speaker to talk about her experience at the Deb Ball held earlier this year. I’m really looking forward to hearing her perspective and feedback as a participant. It always looks terrific to the guests, hopefully the students enjoy it even more! ;)

Conundrum of the week….

A horse is tied to a five metre rope in front of an old saloon. Six metres behind the horse is a bale of hay. Without breaking his rope, the horse is able to eat the hay whenever he chooses. How is this possible?

Kids Fun Run With Thomas

John Henderson reminded us there are 103 sleeps to go!!

We were delighted to welcome the John Mc Foundation to our meeting who have kindly donated HEAPS of toys and goodies for the showbags for the KFRWT. John and the team provided some insight into the work they undertake to help the homeless as well as providing wonderful support to our event - so wonderful to see great people doing wonderful things in the community.

The John Mc Foundation is holding a fundraiser on 30 November so please put in this in your diaries and join the club in supporting their own fundraising event. See notice under Community Notices.

The KFRWT event is on track with all sponsors now secured including Thats Right Bookkeeping owned by Sangeeta.

Community Service

Susi reported on the Emerald Village Committee meeting where CEO of Cardinia Carol Jeffs attended and will supply updated minutes from the meeting to link from Sparkle.

The Community Committee will be organising a Roster to support the Dig In Cafe on a Friday per month from 5.45 to 8.00. Help is needed to serve meals. If you are particularly interested please reach out to Susi.

Susi also mentioned her efforts advocating for a family that needed an upgrade to their wheelchair through the disability fund and was successful in helping them gain what they needed for their son.

RAMS Conference

PP PHF Gloria Hargreaves reminded us that registrations will soon close for the RAM Conference in Melbourne which is a national event and worth attending.

International Committee

In his role on the Disaster Aid Australia Committee PHF Peter Hadwen reported that District 9820 had provided $30k and that Rotary International will match this sum. He spoke about their work to install 120 filters to schools in Bhutan and that 22 clubs had contributed $90k to support the project. Some magnificent work going on at Disaster Aid Australia.

Ros provided a really interesting Behind the Badge talk based around the concept of Ikigai. Which is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being." The word "ikigai" is usually used to indicate the source of value in one's life or the things that make one's life worthwhile.

It brings together your spiritual and practical sides and looks at your passions and talents matching them with what the world needs and what you are paid for.

For Ros her passions are:

Her partner and friends
Good food and wine
Her home in Macclesfield that she has rennovated over the years since moving there in 1988
Her 4 dogs
Her horses Shriaz and Merlot as well as the smaller additions, Olly Rocky and Rory (who are just gorgeous)

Ros owns her own business Marcomm Australia and she loves

Shining a light on what matters for her clients
Educating and empowering through her marketing and PR company
Helping business owners find what their greater good is what they bring through their culture, brand communication and customer experiences

She often asks the question of her clients - What do you stand for - what do you bring that makes the world a better place? She looks at this through the lens of collaboration, inspiration, education and celebration.

Ros brought along Brandy, her mascot, that was given to her at her book launch in 2016.

She believes 'Together We Can Do So Much'.

Ros is focused on a larger goal of what the world needs - her work to establish 'Animal Humanity Worldwide' - a kindness revolution for animals. She is setting up an e-commerce platform to help raise funds to support this very worthwhile goal.

What a wonderful insight into a very talented lady within our midst!!

The Great Community Raffle is on again!!

In collaboration with Ferntree Gully Nissan the Rotary Club of Emerald and District is proud to be associated with this wonderful community fundraising event.

All you have to do is contact us to request tickets, sell the tickets to your support base and ticket holders go into the draw for a Qashqai ST Auto generously donated by Ferntree Gully Nissan.

If you raise $100 your club or community group receives $100 - it is a no-brainer fundraiser. Now is the time to get active and join in this year's Great Community Raffle - you have nothing to loose and so much to gain for your projects and programs.

A total of $1,388,209.70 has been raised for local organisations since the initiative began in 2010. A remarkable achievement thanks to the wonderful generosity of the Ferntree Gully Motor Group.

Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges Music BIngo Night

The Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges Music bingo night on Friday 6 September at Club Kilsyth.

B-Sharp Bingo is a take of normal bingo, where we replace the numbers with music rounds and everyone has a bingo board to fill out. It will follow the similar format of last years event and we expect it to be bigger and better!!

We are raising funds for the EB foundation. EB stands for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a condition which affects the skin.

Tickets are $25 each or a table of 10 for $200. TICKETS HERE

John Mc Foundation Fundraising Event

The John Mc Foundation have kindly supported the Kids Fun Run With Thomas by providing some wonderful inclusions for the showbags.

They are running their own fundraising event on 30th November.
