Vicki, Chiew Hwa, Peter Brock, Rebecca Alexander and Catherine

Rebecca shared her personal journey of growing up in a tea plantation community under conditions of significant poverty, where access to education and basic resources was limited. Through sponsorship, she was able to attend school—an opportunity that ultimately transformed her life and enabled her to support others facing similar challenges.
The presentation highlighted the difficult conditions faced by tea plantation workers, including low wages, demanding labour, and inadequate housing and sanitation. These factors contribute to ongoing cycles of poverty within these communities.
Wings of Hope addresses these challenges by supporting over 200 children and 150 families through a range of initiatives, including:
- Educational support and school resources
- Nutritional programs and daily meals
- Life skills and vocational training
- Health, hygiene, and vision care services
- Infrastructure improvements such as sanitation and housing
The program focuses on long-term empowerment, with education as a central requirement and pathway to breaking intergenerational poverty.
The presentation was both informative and impactful, reinforcing the importance of targeted, sustainable support in creating meaningful change.

John Shaw -Australian Rotary Health (ARH) - Fundraising Bike Ride
Rotary Ride for Research 2026
John Shaw rode 531 km around Central Victoria as part of the 2026 Rotary Ride for Research.
The object of the Ride (apart from getting to the end) was to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health and the riders involved raised over $35,000 collectively.
John raised $3,569 of that and our Club contributed a further $500, bringing his total to $4,069.00.
Members of our Club together contributed nearly $1,500 of that, which was a really great effort. Thank you so much - to all those who pledged a contribution to give him the incentive to pedal longer and harder!
Interest has been kindled in a few members of the Club to join John on the Ride next year and if you would like to be part of it - as a rider or a support driver - talk to him.

The Flu season is approaching
I read a book called The Zinc Solution
Zinc is a very important trace element in our diet
Zinc is absolutely essential for thought processes
Zinc is also important for the Immune system
There is a virus called avian influenza that kills a lot of chooks if it gets into a shed full of chooks
Recently it went through a lot of farms and caused a shortage of eggs and an increase in price of eggs
The same virus does not affect ducks at all They can be a carrier
So I got out my almanac and checked out the zinc levels of chicken breast meat and compared it with duck breast meat
Both were reared the same bred the same and fed a very similar diet
The duck meat was 50 times higher in Zinc than the chicken meat
The DNA of the ducks had found a way of accumulating zinc
So I take a zinc tablet each day
There is a good level of zinc in oyster
6 oysters gives you 75 mg
