No meeting this week due to Cup Day (Good Luck if you’re having a flutter!!), but what a fabulous meeting we had on Tuesday night!!! Good Food, Good Fellowship and certainly Good Fun!!! Thank you again to everyone who added a touch of Halloween to our meeting….some showing more bravery than others (Aneesh! Awesome suit; shame you couldn’t eat! Dinner was delicious!!) Special thanks to Ken for bringing along some amazing decorations – despite being one of those who said numerous times, “I don’t do Halloween.” Have we converted you, Ken?!
District Governor Shia Smart and her family, husband Duncan and son Flynn, came along in costumes and had a wonderful time. We heard a little about Shia’s goals as District Governor and then Flynn spoke about the DG Family’s project for this year, giving books to under-privileged children in schools. A very worthwhile cause and one which our club will support with a donation.
The other terrific part of the night, was the induction of our new member, Roy Bowyer. Roy has been patiently waiting to be inducted (it has been quite a few weeks!!) and Tuesday night was the perfect opportunity. Ably supported by his wife, Aly, daughter and grandchildren, “Count” Roy was welcomed officially into the Rotary Club of Emerald & District. Gayle Barrot is his sponsor and Russ Nielsen his mentor. I wish Roy many happy years in Rotary and I know he will be wonderful addition to our Club.
A pretty busy time for us all coming up. Christmas is just around the bend…with a few enjoyable speed humps along the way! The Kids Fun Run With Thomas of course is the big one for our Club. Please do your best to spread the word to young and old. As I understand it, we still have some registration spots available. The more runners we can gather, the more money we can give to Monash Children’s Cancer Centre.
This time of the year is such a busy one for so many of us. I want to sincerely thank all of you for putting aside time for Rotary. I know we all put in what we can, when we can, and this week I’d like to thank Kris Ash for her continuing efforts with The Sparkle in particular. Despite travelling constantly (well, really often) with the magic of the internet, she is able to whip up a Sparkle each week. If only the wretched President would send her report each week….I’m really sorry, Kris!
The conundrum this week….. How to get the President to remember to send a report to Kris before Saturday?!
To finish off, here’s a little something to ponder over the coming days. Our Rotary magazines are filled with stories of amazing people doing amazing things.
Whilst reading through these magazines, it struck me that every good deed, every successful project was all started by ONE person who had a passion for an idea. That person brought that idea to their Club which enabled the passion to spread and the idea then became a project. Sometimes, it spreads from Club to Club and becomes much bigger than even the original passionate soul could have imagined. One person, one idea, making a difference.
That is the power of Rotary.
