Tuesday’s meeting was varied yet again. Guest Speakers Nick & Lisa Ralph were truly inspirational with their story of how Nick, whilst working as a photographer for World Vision met a passionate Ugandan youth called Isaac and how Nick and his family commenced fundraising to ensure that Isaac gained an education at university and follow his dream of working in the media industry. (Coincidently Rotary’s theme for September is Basic Education and Literacy) To complete the education will still take another $3000. The first of “Where they are from” Know your Rotarian talk was by Tina, who was born in Egypt.  Her family migrated to Australia and researching into the past was an interesting process for Tina herself, let alone the members listening. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  I had sourced some fun trivia questions on Egypt, however as we were running over time, I have added them at the end of Sparkle.
 
DG’s Daryl Moran’s 5-minute video was the first of a series and they will be brought to you regularly. The latest edition of Change Maker is out and the link is there also.  In case you haven’t read your copy yet the RAWCS Dandenong Ranges Storm Recovery appeal closed off on 31st August and raised $101,722.50 with 72% of the funds from Rotary Clubs. Daryl did give a special mention to Emerald and District “who contributed a mighty effort in their local area. Hands on assistance was provided by club members to the CFA, Kalorama Relief Centre, and donations were directed towards providing clothing, firewood, donations of vouchers for grocery and fuel, Bunning’s vouchers and equipment to locals in need.” Emerald Rotary is researching how to apply for RAWC’s funds. There is a Rescue the Logs group in Kalorama already formed with a huge project and the Community team, together with the Cluster Clubs are investigating whether there is an area that we could be involved with.
 
Good news that I shared at the meeting was that for the first time, the Emerald Village Association are inviting nominations for the Community Organisation of the Year Award for 2021. I was approached by Martin Buoncristiani to say that if the Club was open to it, he would organise a submission on our behalf. Over the last few weeks Ros, Kris, Tina, Gloria and Susi have in some way been involved in assisting this process which resulted in references from ECHO, Community House, The Glades, St Luke’s, Macclesfield & Cockatoo PS’s & Emerald SC and copies of newspaper articles – all to back up the submission.  We are up against strong competition from the SES & CFA. We have to wait until next year for the outcome.
 
Next week we have the “Induction” for Tracey-Lee Bannister. If you are able, can you please attend to support and congratulate her. We also will have Greg King talking about the Paul Harris Society.  Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary International in 1905.

Where do you come from? - PP PHF Tina McInerney

Member Roy Bowyer suggested we have a slot in meetings on occasions to highlight where we all come from.  Kicking this off was Tina who provided some wonderful insights into her past including the fact she was born in Egypt and grew up there, and that her parents were multi-multi lingual!!!  Her father was a cheesemaker (and subsequently won awards for his skills at the Melbourne Show).  When Nasser changed the way of life for foreign residents in Egypt her family came to Melbourne.  At the time, in the early 50's Melbourne was a very different place.  Her family moved to SW Tasmania but returned to Melbourne - to Belgrave.  Tina is forever grateful to her dad for making the decision to come to Australia.
