Not something that we want to do every Rotary year is run 2 Deb Balls within 5 months however this has been achieved and the 2nd was last Saturday evening and a resounding success thanks to the hard work and dedication of Lyn Beckwith and Lorna Shaw. Thank you for making it such a memorable evening for the 35 couples plus their family and friends. Unsolicited feedback from people who I didn’t know had even attended has been really good, so it appears that we have a formula in place that works. Unfortunately, on the day one Debutante had Covid, however her partner and his family attended. He was able to take part in the “Boys dance” and his mother escorted him for the Presentation to the Guests of Honour – this received a huge applause. Our photographer at this event is normally Kris Ash however she too was unwell so the happy snaps have been provided courtesy of myself and Lyn. These were loaded onto our website the next day so go onto our site and have a look.
One of the main projects that the Youth committee has taken onboard this year is the Kitchen Garden at Emerald Secondary College. You may remember that Youth obtained a grant from Cardinia Council at the start of the year. At Tuesday’s meeting two of the pupils from the college’s Year 12, Chloe and Chelsea provided a power point presentation of how the land looked originally, what has been done and what is planned. Not only have we been able to work with our youth we have also been able to cover off the new Rotary area of focus, which is Sustainability and the Environment.
Carol Cain has now been in the Club 6 months and it was arranged for her to present her “Behind the Badge” talk on Tuesday. As Vocational “Chair” Roy suggested that to ease new members into speaking to us as a group, that this talk was conducted by way of a Q&A session. This worked well and we enjoyed learning more about Carol and her very interesting life pre-Rotary.
Roy will be busy at next week’s meeting too as we have the McLeod Murphy recipients Sarah Prass, Yebin Yang and Kara O’Sullivan attending to provide an update on how their medical courses are progressing in their 2nd year. The intention is to run this session as a Q&A. And very importantly we will be conducting our last Induction for the Rotary year. Please ensure that you attend to support Kerith Cummins.
For Tuesday, 28th June, 30 of us are booked into the Cameo to see the Elvis movie which commences at 7.15pm. I will send a reminder out ahead of the evening in case you have forgotten how many you booked for.
I circulated an invitation from Monbulk Rotary to attend their 50th Changeover evening on Wednesday 29th June at Rose Cottage, Monbulk – hope that some of you can support them. Belgrave are having their Changeover on Wednesday 6th July at the RSL however I don’t have any additional information at this stage. And off course it is our Changeover on Tuesday 5th July at The Independent, Gembrook. Remember to RSVP to Lorna.
I am sad to advise that Ros Weadman has decided to leave the Club due her heavy workload and commitments running a farm. I am so appreciative that I managed to keep her with us throughout my Rotary year. Ros raised the profile of our Club and has been able to showcase us and be at the forefront of the local media and publications. With her ability to convert my information, she had me provide quotations and update the community and as a result I have a substantial scrap book for the year. Whilst Ros was unable to attend regular meetings, she contributed greatly to the Club one way or another over the last few years, being able to articulate and provide guidance on PR and her insight and knowledge has greatly helped. I thank Ros for all her assistance and hard work. I wish Ros, Wayne and their fur family all the best for the future.

Behind the Badge Roy Bowyer & Carol Cain – an interview
Early Years – first 13 years in Apollo Bay, was very different then.Dad had a store there which he managed.Apollo Bay consolidated school form 1 to form 2 then had to go to Geelong to go to school.Carol went to year 7 (from 1 at Apollo Bay).Dad’s store was a general store, newspaper, hardware, stock feed haberdashery, Carol got to go and sit in the back and read the comics so long as they were not creased.Didn’t have to do any work there it only had play, fun and school.
After dad sold store in 1960 then did a month as keeper at Cape Otway, he loved it – joined the Commonwealth Lighthouse Clippy Island – near Wilson’s Prom, in Bass Straight.20 acres of granite sitting out of the sea and 3 houses.Head keeper and 2 light keepers.Spent 6-12 months there and did schooling via correspondence.Clippy Island was a fun place for a child.
First job and special person met there.After finished school at Williamstown High School stayed with Aunt.Met husband at first job, a printing company.In the basement – was in Chinatown (weird and wonderful people in the area)
1967 married Gordon then got involved in the printing industry – we were in the same job and built house in Noble Park.1980 decided to set up own company in back shed.Cain Colour Printing started up there in the back shed.
1990 Christopher – son joined the company (later his wife Naomi joined as well so a family business)
1996 moved to Emerald – why?Wanted peace and quiet, wanted to go back to country roots.Gayle took them to one of the houses they looked out.Bought a house in Sydney Avenue and were very happy there.
2002 – Gordon and Carol had 3 children Benjamin passed away, had a seizure that was fatal – very sad and tragic.Now has 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.In that difficult year moved to UV printing (print on plastic and electrostatic printing).Did a lot of work for 7 Eleven.Did a lot of trade work for clients, not the public.
Bought a factory in Dandenong in 1990 so in 2002 leased a factory in Keysborough to put the large machines in.Proved to be very successful.
2010 retired and travelled – all over Australia in a caravan.Been across Nullaboor 7 times!!Chris and Naomi took over the business when they retired.
2020 – Gordon passed away in February which was very sad.Then we had all the COVID lockdowns – been married 52 and a half years.
What are you most proud of?My children and grandchildren but also my resilience of talking about myself.

As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth month, your support is providing essential relief for some of the most vulnerable people across the country.
The war continues to take a huge toll on the civilian population with the humanitarian situation increasingly dire. But I am heartened by the generosity of supporters like you, who have so far raised more than $3.5 million for families in need.
I am also inspired by the extraordinary stories of courage and selflessness from my colleagues in Caritas Ukraine, Caritas Spes Ukraine and other Caritas agencies on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, who work around-the-clock to ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind.
Over 1,000 staff and more than 700 volunteers are working on the humanitarian response in Ukraine, providing urgent services to internally displaced people. With your generous support, the Caritas Ukraine network has helped more than 1 million people with urgent essentials, such as food aid, clean water, shelter and hygiene kits.

More than 524,954 people received food assistance, with 65% of those being women.
70,581 people received bed linens.
208,178 people received hygienic sets.
Psychosocial support was provided to 2,827 people, especially targeting children.
21,089 people received assistance with access to water and sanitation.
The funds you have helped raise are also supporting Caritas Moldova, in partnership with Catholic Relief Services, to provide transitional accommodation to Ukrainians displaced by the conflict. Over 460,000 people fled into Moldova since the war began.
Thank you for standing with the people of Ukraine as they face this ongoing humanitarian crisis.
