What a lovely surprise we all had on Tuesday evening – Tom Watson on zoom at The Glades, being able to chat with us. John Ritchie was responsible for setting this up. Great initiative and appreciated by everyone. Thanks John.
 
Our newest member Tracy Bannister provided us with her Behind the Badge and it was interesting to hear not only her journey to date but also that of her parents who came from Morley.  As an ex Pom from Manchester, I had not heard of it but John Henderson thought it was on the coast, however a google search reveals that it is actually near Leeds and therefore Yorkshire not Lancashire.
It would seem that the length of time it takes for me to load our DG’s 5 Minute monthly talk nearly exceeds the talk time, so I think for Emerald we will have to be rename the segment as Daryl’s 10 minutes. At least it got the meeting off to a fun start and judging by the amount of laughter throughout the whole evening I would say the evening was a success. I must try and find some pictures of pepper mills for Ros!
 
The updated Rules & Bylaws were circulated on 12th October.  Can you please read them and let John Shaw know if you have any concerns or questions by 19th October. We want to ensure that we have everything covered off ahead of our AGM scheduled for 30th November.  The notice for the AGM plus financial documentation and previous minutes will be circulated to you in the coming weeks by Secretary John Shaw.
 
Following the Board meeting on Monday it has now been documented - based on the Clubs feedback on retention of the National Anthem and the Invocation, that the National Anthem (at live meetings) will be sung at DG visit, Changeover, 1st meeting of the new Rotary year, Award and celebration nights, Christmas and special events determined by the President. Singing on zoom will not occur!  The Invocation will remain and recited at Rotary meetings.
 
We have been sent a list of worthwhile projects that may keep you occupied in lockdown. The list is provided further down in the newsletter.
 
Re: Hat Day fines for Australian Rotary Health’s “Lift the Lid on Mental illness.”.  Thank you to everyone who has already deposited their fines into Account 1.  We will close off the collection on Tuesday 19th October so you still have a chance to donate. Donation/fines should be paid into our Bendigo bank account: BSB: 633 000   Account: 156947988. Reference as Hat Day fines.
 
Considering that we are in lockdown, there is a lot happening behind the scenes.  Many Rotarians are providing me with interesting suggestions and it is just a case of working through these to see if we can move forward with them. I love the fact that there is so much thought and involvement still occurring in a time when it is easier to just shut the door and sit out this pandemic. But it has to be said we are “different”.  Which makes me think about Conference!  Vicki has emailed you all for feedback as to how many of you will be attending and will be staying somewhere. Do it.  It is so much fun and allows us to bond and party! I just need someone to share with – female off course. Dave will be home alone on pet duty.

Guest Speaker - Our Very (Now) Own Tracey Bannister

  • Tracey Lee – brother and sister, parents from Lancs. Morley nr Blackpool. Came to AU when they were 12 and 9
  • Tracey's grandparents left UK and knew of each other in UK settled in Sale and became neighbours, mum and dad known each other since 12 and 9.Moved to Ringwood and Burwood but got together.
  • MHer parents were butchers as she was growing up and this gave her the love of business, Tracey can remember  the old ledger books her mum used to open up in the evenings
  • Never enjoyed school, loved friends – High School Music and Drama – guitar and saxophone (played the longest) still trying to play the piano
  • Tap dancing is a passion
  • Tracey has 2 boys
  • When younger she was a Brownie and Girl Guide and loved going to camp and taking part in the different activities to get the badges, therefore a passion for giving to the community
  • Recently she completed the Kokoda Trail on behalf of the Alopecia Foundation $12.5k raised – has this herself so understands the importance of supporting this cause.  The funds raised helped 30 kids spent a week together bonding and understanding they are not alone. The Kokoda Trail was hard, was one of biggest achievements in her life
  • Tracey now owns the optical business in Emerald– been in industry 30 years, bravery now to open own business.Time to open herself.  https://emeraldeyesoptical.com.au/

  • Thank you to everyone in the club for the contributions, it made a difference and helped the bags become far better than last year
