McLeod Murphy Scholarship Awards
Introduced by Vocational Chair – PP PHF Gayle Barrot
The scholarship fund was originally managed by Joe Falcone. The funds were gifted to provide a legacy of Dr McLeod Murphy. In his retirement he would visit sick patients and wouldn’t charge them. He wanted to continue that legacy and established a scholarship to encourage study in the field of medicine.
Rotary has been the custodian of the trust fund since 1986.
Louisa Lammers from Emerald Village Pharmacy has been a great financial support as has the Emerald Vet.
PP PHF Marcus – awarded the scholarships:
Ebony Dasler
- Ebony was the Valedictorian for the Emerald Secondary College.A good representative of the cohort of year 12.Volleyball club, Aerobics as sports. She completed year 12 in 2022
- Ebony wanted to do Physio initially, then discovered Occupational Therapy and it is what she now really wants to do. as this allied health profession helps people have control of their lives
- She is studying at Australian Catholic University and is now in the second year of a 4-year course
- Paediatrics is the goal at the moment
- Ebony found out about scholarship through PP PHF Catherine Elfick
- What does it mean to Ebony? – The scholarship is inspiring as it is important that the local community has access to health care including allied health and OT.
Jaicob Barrot
- Marcus has known Jaicob throughout his life as he is best friends with his son NichJolas.
- Jaicob is in his Ist year of medicine this year. He has always wanted to follow a medical career as his brother was in neo-natal care and he went there when he was 3 to visit him. In prep at age of 5 he wrote down he wanted to be a paediatrician and hasn’t faltered from that goal.
- Jaicob went to Emerald Primary School then Emerald Secondary College in 7&8 then applied for Nossal School and was accepted for years 9-12.
- There are various pathways to medicine and Jaicobs was to do an undergraduate course. He sat the UCAT and passed in the top 8% who are invited to Monash for an interview. His ATAR scores were then taken into account.
- His pathway will take 5 years and he has chosen the Extended Rural Cohort which will entail completing placements in rural hospitals in years 3/4/5.
- He was as an aside a black belt in karate when aged 10.
- What does the scholarship mean to Jaicob? He is looking forward to giving back to the rural community – will help with costs of the course.
- He is very thankful and grateful to Rotary for the scholarship.

Your presidency has been a remarkable chapter in our clubs history. Thank you for your dedication and achievements. We acknowledge your hard work and sacrifice as president. We appreciate your unwavering support and guidance throughout your presidency. Thank you for your dedication.
And to the club ....
As we are here today, we acknowledge the progress we've made and the achievements we've accomplished. But we also recognize that there's always room for improvement.
We're not here to simply maintain the status quo or rest on our laurels. We're here to innovate, to push boundaries, and to make things even better.
Better for our community, better for our club, and better for ourselves.
We'll do this by continuing to listen, to learn, and to adapt. By seeking feedback and embracing criticism. By encouraging experimentation and calculated risk-taking.
We'll do this by supporting each other, by lifting each other up, and by celebrating our progress along the way.
So, let's embrace this mindset of continuous improvement. Let's strive to make things better, not just for ourselves, but for those around us.
Together, we can continue achieve great things. Together, we can continue to make a real difference.
Let us approach our committees with gusto and do the most we can to support our committee chairs by sharing the load, being proactive, accommodating and working with purpose. When we work with purpose, we become better versions of ourselves, we develop new skills, new strengths & new perspectives.
As usual this year we have a full dance card with our regular events & initiatives plus some exciting new projects.
In a few short weeks July 25, we have a mental Health Wellbeing forum for Youth,. What an exciting undertaking, any difference we can make to help the 34 percent of young Australians that suffer from poor mental health.
Gayle is super excited over there at vocational whom, together with her team will be busy planning Pride of workmanship. We are discussing a Rotary Open Evening, an opportunity to invite our friends & neighbours who are Rotary curious. We also have some other exciting plans which will hopefully result in a town monument, more details to come!
As your new president I will confess that I am not perfect. Whilst criticism is sometimes hard to hear I welcome your thoughts and ideas. All I ask is that we continue to treat each other with love & respect and understand we are all here for the same reasons & volunteering to make this world a better place.
Let’s rather not be a part of the problem but rather be a part of the solution.
On that note I would like to make a toast. To Fellowship!

Community Service – PP PHF DGN Emma Clark
- The committee donated some money to a person in need in our local area. Family displaced through family violence – needed wood to be supplied. Thank you letter was read out.
Please pass on my many thanks to the EMERALD ROTARY CLUB,
Our two HUGE bags of wood arrived yesterday afternoon.
We are so grateful and honesty really touched that people we dont even know would help us. The EMERALD ROTARY CLUB inspired the wood man and he too generous gave us FOUR bags of kindling!
I cant even put into words what this will do for us, we live off grid and our only way to be warm and have hot water is via the fireplace.
The kids and I have been sick all month, normally i would use food banks as way to feed us, but have been too unwell to venture into one. There is no way i could ever of got money for this wood.
I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart, Family violence is so physically and mentally draining. And i am sure my husband thought the being off grid - the kids and i would never survive, everyday he throws something else at us. But here we are still standing… Yes i spend most of day at the police or on the phone to police.
But i am still standing and with help like getting fire wood thats made that possible for another day.
