FREEDOM Friday!  Woohoo, it feels great, doesn’t it?  Thanks, Marcus, for sharing your George Michael video clip – I feel so much better now that it is not only me that struggles with uploading sound videos onto zoom. Loved being able to sing and dance around at the start and end of our meeting.
 
I would like to be able to say that we are able to go back to the pub for the next meeting however suspect it will be a couple of weeks before that can happen as the following week, we will be enjoying Cup Day’s Wine and Cheese night at either Emerald Lake Park or the Nobelius Park. I will advise on our return as soon as I know. John Shaw and I are already looking at an upgrade to our Hybrid zoom system for those of you who want to join the meetings that way.
 
Club Assembly night was fairly well attended with nearly 2/3rd of the members. Whilst we don’t normally have a speaker on these evenings, Tina did talk to us about “Protocol”.  Unless you are informed you don’t understand the workings of Rotary and key events when attendance is expected. Bring your partner along to social gatherings so they become comfortable with everyone and remember to invite our Honorary members and friends of Rotary.
 
We collected $201 in fines for Hat Day /Australian Rotary Health’s “Lift the Lid on Mental illness.”.  Thank you to everyone who donated. For information I have forwarded a photo of us all wearing our hats on zoom to the organisation. And thank you to those members who also made a normal fines deposit. You can do this at any time into Bendigo bank account: BSB: 633 000   Account: 156947988. Reference  - Fines.
 
Whilst the Hills storm seems months ago the recovery and distribution of funds is still continuing. Emma’s Community team have now finalised distribution of the balance of the Club’s Storm relief funds. With a donation of $1,440 to Mt. Dandenong Primary School to run the wellbeing program called “Seasons” for students impacted by storms and the Club is to pay $360 to Gem Signs which covers the signs used at the staging area during the “Help the Hills” storm recovery project. The Cluster group is continuing to meet regularly to address distribution of the RAWC’s funds. It is hoped that DG Daryl Moran can attend the next meeting on 28th October.
 
Next week we are inducting our 2nd new member into the Club for the 2021-2022 Rotary Year, so you are encouraged to attend to support Greg Adams.  Greg has a wealth of knowledge and we are looking forward to him becoming a valuable part of our team. We also will be having our two twins Susi Wilson and John Shaw sharing what life has been like growing up as a twin (not each other) – did they wear the same clothes, did they play tricks on people, can they read each other’s minds? – hopefully all will be revealed, Also, Don Borg is going to talk to us about where he was born/grew up. It should be an entertaining evening.
 
It has still to be decided whether we can resume the Trash 2 Treasure Market with effect November. If it is able to proceed it will have been moved to our new monthly date of the 2nd Saturday of the month ie.13th November.  Catherine and Emma will advise as soon as they can.  In readiness for all those people who keep telling us “I don’t carry any cash” we now have an EFT machine. I currently hold it however it will be handed over to Lorna our Club Service Chairperson for safekeeping.  For information, the Club phone is currently with Catherine.

Fundraising - PP PHF Kris Ash

The Fundraising Committee is focusing on the Cup Day celebrations at the moment.  Please let Sangeeta know you are coming and book it helps if you can let her know you are not!!  At the moment we are planning to go to the area near Nobelius, we will confirm once we know weather etc.   The team are lookng forward to organising our first social event out of prison (I mean lockdown).

This coming Sunday is WORLD POLIO DAY, the 24th of October.
 
‘October is World Polio Month and we all need to intensify our fund-raising efforts for END POLIO NOW,’ said The Rotary Foundation Chairman and RI Past President John Germ to a Zoom meeting of Rotary senior leaders and RI END POLIO NOW Coordinators a month ago.
RI PolioPlus Chairman and RI Past Vice President Mike McGovern announced he has ‘never been more confident of the imminent success of our campaign’.
 
There are still only TWO cases of wild polio virus diagnosed this calendar year – one each in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Despite the return of the Taliban to government in Afghanistan, there are positive signs that the Polio Eradication Campaign is still on track and innocent children will be saved.
  • Only ONE environmental sample was detected from test sites in that country.
  • WHO and UNICEF staff have been allowed to stay and continue operations.
  • Vaccination Days are continuing in Afghanistan.
  • Our Polio teams are optimistic about working with the new Taliban Government.
 
Media challenges continue where there are constant reports of new wild polio virus cases across the middle of the African continent. On EVERY occasion however, the cases have been identified as vaccine-derived virus.

On-To-Conference Accommodation - IPP Vicki Van Den Bergen

 
The Victoria Hotel in Lt. Collins St. can provide a number of rooms for us for the District Conference weekend on 25th-26th March 2022 at better rates than those on the Booking.com Website.

So, I need those seeking this accommodation to let me know if you require 1 or 2 nights’ accommodation and also the type of room you want, i.e. are you a couple, or are you a single who would like to share with another single?

Please email your preference to me as soon as possible so that I can let the Hotel know the number of rooms we require, as the longer we leave it, the fewer choices we will have. Thank you to those who have already emailed me.
 

Membership - PHF Pres Elect Marcus Adams

Next week we look forward to inducting Greg Adams.
  • The Membership Committee attended a District Membership Seminar and we are looking to adopt a program that has been working well at the Boronia Rotary Club.  We are:
  • Requesting that all of our members to provide us with a list of names, including if possible postal address, email address and contact number, of locals that they believe may be a good fit for our Rotary Club;
  • At each Club meeting we will let our members know of 4 or 5 prospective members who we are looking to invite and see if anyone knows them;
  • We will then send an invitation letter by post, and potentially include a postscript (PS) from a member who knows them saying something along the lines that ‘the member hopes to catch up with them at a meeting’;
  • Then after about 5 days someone from our MC (or Club) will make a warm call to invite – them member making the call will be armed with a template to help answer any questions, and hopefully the prospective member will come along!
  • And a reminder for all members to reach out to a member during the week.
  • Hopefully another big announcement coming in the next week or so …

International - PP PHF Ian Ash

International committee has donated $100 towards Mahboba’s Promise, an Australian Aid organisation established by a lady from Afghanistan (Mahboba) who has been living in Melbourne for some years now is working tirelessly to support Afghan orphans coming to Australia (see https://mahbobaspromise.org/  for more info).  The work she is doing is quite exceptional and although funds are low, contributing to such a good international cause on home is worth doing.
 

Club Protocol

  • Tina provided her insights into Rotary Protocol including the importance of bringing partners along to events - we love to see them and they are part of the Rotary family! 
  • She also highlighted the difficulty in recent years to get 'new blood' into club leadership positions.  New members and those who haven't yet taken on a mantle will undoubtedly have some  terrific ideas to bring to the table.  Please consider putting your hand up or saying yes when invited to help.  Rotary is about learning and growing and this is a great opportunity.
  • Taking part in social events is also important for us all especially after the last couple of years, its a great way to grow the bonds and connections in the club, to form lasting and meaningful friendships.  Come along and take part!!
  • Events club members should make a priority to attend - Changeover, first meeting of the new Presidential Year, the DG's annual visit and of course as many meetings as you can attend, being present and there makes for a vibrant, happy club :)
