On behalf of Belgrave appreciate support and helping hand – dropped down to 6 members after COVID – want to build club and support of neighbouring clubs is appreciated.
The RC of Belgrave is working hard to connect with the community, council and Upway RSL eg Halloween with philanthropic and a twilight market in Tacoma, looking at a short film festival next year and cyber awareness program next year and looking at Business Breakfasts next year.
This 6 months we are concentrating on building ethos and backbone of the club again.

Marcus – congratulations on the joint meeting tonight he had spoken with the RC Emerald & District Board to assist with the building of the Belgrave club as the members of Belgrave supported our Charter over 40 yrs ago and we appreciated their support in our Chartership. We need to support each other as there are great benefits to our communities as 3 strong clubs in the ranges including Monbulk will make a difference.
Outstanding to see new members being inducted at Belgrave.

Sally Dawe – Growing Biodiversity
Sally lives in Emerald last 10 yrs 2 kids at EPS has a masters in urban horticulture from Melb. Uni. Passionate about growing bio diversity in urban spaces.
6 yrs ago got into gardening – developed land, as a child decided to go to Uni and have a tree change. Wonderful learning experience. Drawn to public landscapes growing lots of food picking and eating out of the garden.
Food production course couldn’t get the scheduling right but public landscapes bio-diversity and what we need more of.
3 things she learnt from the course:-
- Urban ecology – so much going on in these spaces and the loss of bio-diversity is important. Cities are rich landscapes for bio-diversity
- Public landscapes need to be low cost and low maintenance as we don’t have the resources to maintain them
- Humans need to connect with nature if they are going to care for it – public landscapes is for that.We all have a cultural lens and children and adults interact differently.
She was fortunate to get a job with City of Greater Dandenong in open parks spaces. Manage 700 hectacres of land in the city. Used in all sorts of different way. Run the planting program and all the stakeholders involved in developing a landscape.
Growing bio-diversity in open urban spaces.
- Urban empty spaces (UES) – what are they? Community groups use it – what some see as derelict may be a wonderful space for others
- It is important to understand audience and who use the spaces
- UES are where you can imagine a utility for the space
- How can we improve for people an biodiversity and the environment
- Have a look around and you will see UES
- Growing biodiversity – it is important for climate change
- Eco system services – when developing- human and eco use – products you get from the landscape – wood genetic materials, clean the air, water, pollination as well ash the human religious and aesthetic amenities
- Used to work with a lot of refugees in the Dandenong area and older clients and parks they can access and can see nature.What are they getting out of that space?
- How do you connect and access nature – human needs health and well-being from nature
- How cognitive abilities improve when interacting with nature
- It is a balance and access to that is important
- Lots to think about nuts and bolts, how do we do this – still partner with Melb Uni – 3 trial sights of woody indigenous plants that are low maintenance – looking at fire in the landscape cut down low to avoid fire.
- Pollinator projects as well
Diane Luc – Outer East FoodShare
- FoodShare is a delivery service
- 1 ton refrigerated truck is used for food distribution from Foodbank and Second Bite - we deliver to Yarra Ranges and Dandenong Ranges – we also deliver to Cockatoo and Knox council – Halloween on the Green on Sunday at the Uniting Church
- Astounding the amount of need in the hills and people tucked away to help the community – homeless and drug addicts are some but most are employed but cannot afford rent, school insurance and food, the trend for many is increasing the support – we need to help more and more people
- FoodShare needs volunteers for driving– the network is increasing all the time, whatever your schedule please make contact as we would be very happy to receive support

PHF John Henderson – Kids Fun Run With Puffing Billy
- Thank you to all of you who distributed posters, I keep on seeing them
- Sassafras School the other day for the school visit – posters already there
- Belgrave are taking a pile to help us with Tacoma and Upway
- Things are going really well – registration opened on Friday – 4 days and 80 runners registered already (Max 540) doing well
- Facebook posts – please share, like and comment – Kids Fun Run with Puffing Billy
- Toot Toot at Chadstone – lovely toy shop and lovely person still supporting the KFRWPB, raffle prizes $5 voucher in the show bag, having a stall on the day. Sponsoring first run had to use Mon. Children’s Hosp with the kids – a wonderful sponsor
- Big Russ Nielsen – the trophies are now redesigned
International Report - PHF John Henderson
- Chair John Henderson announced $1000 has been donated to RAM this month – Gloria said thank you and provided information on RAM activities including:
- RAM Conference in Brisbane – 22 speakers really good and scientific research. Presentations on research and malaria elimination and reports on COVID interrupted malaria programs – cards on the table terrible statistic – because of COVID a child dies of malaria every minute.
- There has been a need to stop all health workers working in anything other than COVID therefore Malaria eradication has been affected.
- Response has been swift – 5 countries Vanuatu has a response team to get it back on track with a goal of declaring them malaria free at the end of next year.
