The singing this week was better but still highly unlikely to win us any awards but we were well entertained by John Koenders lively account of his upbringing and how he got into photography accompanied by a variety of old and classic cameras.  There is clearly a very creative side to the whole of the Koenders family which I am sure we’ll see much more of in coming years.

This was the last of the two joint Board Meetings and the final one for me as President in 2018-19.  I have to say that the Board and Committee leads this year have done an amazing job in every single respect – not only have we raised more money than we expected, we have made some very significant donations that will have far-reaching effects in the local community and beyond.  The events have not only been very well attended, the whole Club seemed to have fun being a part of these, so a big thank you to everyone involved.   All the best to Catherine and her new Board 2019-20.

Yours in Rotary,
President Ian Ash
Last Week's Meeting

John Koenders - Behind the Badge

John’s Dad was originally from Holland and both parents are artists and still have art shows.  It turns out that John found out in 2011 that he is actually related to Vincent van Gogh so no wonder he is creative!

John has two sisters (Jane and Emily) and they were brought up in the country in a dairy farm not far from Arrawatta NSW.  It was initially a tough life (had to milk 60 cows by hand) but he has fond memories of his childhood which inspired the creative side he has today.

He went to school in Leongatha and left in Year 11 to pursue photography.  As a young man he was also passionate about sport: football, cricket, soccer and badminton which he has played at “A grade” level since he was 16.  He describes himself as “geeky” having an interest in Audio/Visual and all things electronic.  He switched to digital photography as it came in in 2000 and paid $12K for a 6 megapixel camera which he used for weddings and spent a further $3K on SD cards.  After leaving school he became a radio DJ for a country radio station in Inverloch.

In 1993 he opened a custom framing and photography shop in Leongatha doing work for weddings, portraits and farm animals  and continues this now in Berwick to which he moved in 2004.  Nowadays he primarily focuses his photography on events and sports clubs.
