Tuesday’s alternative and surprise talk by Greg Adams turned out to be a CPR session. The horrifying account of Greg’s brush with near death demonstrates that we should have the skills level and knowledge of what to do if the occasion ever presents itself. Every minute counts and being able to take control of the situation immediately makes the difference between life and death. On a lighter note, members were advised numerous times to bring a pillow – no prizes for guessing the success rate! Also, partners were invited and it was lovely to have Jenny Wakefield along and Honorary member Colin Brown attended again.
Last Saturday was the 9th Market we have run and the first time of trading under our name Emerald Rotary Market banner. Thank you to DG Daryl Moran and Jenny for taking the time out of their very busy schedule to attend. No rest for them though as they were returning to the Rowville Club’s “Clean up Australia” working bee. I am pleased to report that despite the fact that we have reduced the stall holders fee to $10 for a few months to encourage new stallholders to attend, we sold out of sausages for the first time and made the highest profit. The market committee worked really hard to drum up enthusiasm and spread the word via social media and should be proud of this months’ outcome. The stall holders were happy and all bar one will be back next month (the missing one will be back the following month) Hopefully we will see the CFA and their truck again – it added another dimension to the market and the kids loved the balloons and sirens. Next month is the Easter market so the Market committee are meeting on Sunday to work on a strategy for drumming up interest.
The Fundraising team are hard at work with a Sausage Sizzle scheduled for Saturday 2nd April outside the Emerald Butchers (please volunteer) and they are in the process of getting raffle tickets printed for an Easter Raffle.
Hot on the heels of the February Deb Ball, Lorna is hard at work processing all the registrations for 11th June 2022 Deb Ball and Lyn is churning out emails to the suppliers etc. Hard to believe that we are only weeks off commencing dance practices.
At late notice Rotary and Parker from Star News group were invited to the first reading of “The Story of the Big Storm” at Emerald’s Steiner School, located alongside Cardinia Reservoir. The reception it received was good so anticipate an even better one at the presentation at Mt Dandenong PS next Friday morning. Just let me know if you would like to come along. Rotary sponsored this publication.
The coming week is going to be BIG – we have the Cocktail Making Master Class at Elevation on Emerald on Tuesday evening (this social replaces our normal meeting) with members from Belgrave Rotary joining us. And then on Friday we commence partying with the start of Convention at the Caulfield Racecourse. A lot of work has already been put into our “Award winning” costumes and props and with Gayle, Lyn and Kelly working behind the scenes we will look GREAT. Get excited!

Guest Speaker - Greg Adams CPR – a life saving skill
Greg had an unexpected heart attack at the age of 46 and was in a coma for 10 days after the Waringal Private hospital team had attempted to restart his heart 21 times
He did have high cholesterol but a week earlier went to the doctor with a cough, swollen arms and legs
All the symptoms were there and you don’t know they are there
It is vita we all know what to do
Every minute you lose in effectively responding to a heart attack means 10% of life has ebbed away - after 10 minutes the person has little chance of recovery
What to do – Call - Push - Shock
Call 000 for ambulance immediately so help is on the way
Push hard, push fast (take it in turns – swap every 2 minutes)
Kneel with knees apart, lock hands push down 1/3 of the chest deep and keep arms straight - use your body weight to pump as it will be less tiring
Press in the middle of the chest
How fast - 2 compressions a second ‘Row row row your boat gently down the stream”
Shock – AED’s turn on and follow instructions only deliver shock when needed
Remove clothes from chest
Put pads on

Born in the south of England, parents and grandparents ran pubs so he moved around a lot
Lifelong passion for cooking
Left school at the age of 15 to be a trainee chef
At the age of 18 he was drafted into the army and worked as a chef in England and France
1956 came to Australia with his wife to work as a chef associated with the Olympic Games
Travelled with Heinz (based in Dandenong) working in France and Holland
Worked in restaurants and motels
Wife and he married for 50 years and had 3 children
Now living in the Glades as mobility is reduced

Marie is a former scientist with the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference laboratories eventually moving to the Doherty Institute in Parkville, Victoria. She was the High Security Scientist and was very involved with the WHO Committee on biosafety and containment. Her focus was on viruses—their origin, mutations and transmission.
Marie has a Bachelor Degree in Medical Science from RMIT, a postgraduate degree in Immunology at Monash University and also studied for a Masters Degree in Development Studies at Deakin
University. As well as infectious diseases she has had a long interest in Human Rights and development.
She is a member of the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell, District 9790 and is currently the International Service Chair.
We look forward to hearing from Marie about her work and about the threat to humans from viruses, especially in light of the recent SARS COVID-19 pandemic {and don’t forget Swine Flu, Bird Flu, Zika virus, Ebola virus etc}
