Rotary International Convention - PHF Peter Brock

Peter shared his experiences from attending five Rotary International Conventions, emphasizing the valuable connections made and the positive impact of Rotary worldwide. Attendance varies by location, with 15,000 in Singapore and 10,000 in Houston, where numbers dipped due to being the first in-person event post-COVID. Peter stressed the importance of having events in one location for convenience, reflecting on logistics faced in Melbourne.

Significant topics included the EndPolioNow project, which aims to eradicate polio and improve children's health in under-resourced areas. Peter also spoke about “Mr. Toilet,” who raises awareness about global sanitation issues.

The House of Friendship was likened to a vibrant indoor market, showcasing Rotary Action Groups and Fellowship Groups. Notable events included Foundation Day and hospitality nights hosted by local Rotary clubs, where Peter reconnected with members from Singapore.

Peter engaged with key figures, including Jennifer Scott from UNHCR and Leanne, the Rotary International President’s Personal Representative. He contributed to packing disaster relief meals, reinforcing the hands-on spirit of Rotary’s work. He highlighted environmental efforts in Sumatra, where a drone was funded to combat forest fires.

Overall, the convention served as an inspiring reminder of Rotary's dedication to service and community support.

The recent forum saw over 100 attendees in person and 30 via Zoom. The speakers were exceptional, with Lia impressing many, drawing comparisons to Meryl Streep. Gloria commended the Forum’s Organising Committee for their contributions:

• Marcus emphasized Rotary's commitment to mental well-being.
• Ian Wakefield managed job allocations and networking.
• Kris handled registrations.
• Hita acted as the second MC and facilitated the panel discussion.
• Lisa arranged the evening's speakers and moderated on Zoom.
• John (Monbulk) and Wayne (Belgrave) secured sponsorships.
• Gus oversaw audio/visual efforts and promotions.
• Lia for her amazing acting ability in presenting a realistic role-play with Prof. Sophie

Gloria also acknowledged the support of her husband, Ev, and recognized the teamwork that made the event successful, proposing that potential members be invited to witness Rotary's collaborative spirit. Special thanks were given to the supper team and those who helped with the clean-up, contributing to the venue's excellent condition, which garnered appreciation from St. Mark’s.

A wash-up meeting is scheduled for next Monday, August 5, to address any remaining details. The forum concluded with Tina leading a standing ovation for Gloria, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and long-time advocate for Rotarians Against Malaria, who recently retired after a decade of service.

Tony Benson, a competitor in the 1972 Summer Olympics, initiated the "Run Out Of Poverty" project, seeking Rotary’s assistance to help children in the Philippines earn university scholarships through running. Notably, Tony broke Ron Clarke's Australian record and aimed to coach kids to a competitive level.

From 2016 to 2024, the project raised $22,778.54 through RAWCS donations, which funded shoes, transportation, registration fees, and uniforms for the young athletes. Under Tony's guidance, the initiative identified students who were already running to school, similar to programs in Kenya.

As a result, 10 students received scholarships. Although the project officially closed on June 30, support continues for coaches to identify new athletes, but not with funding from Australia, as RAWCS has halted financial support due to cash payments for transport and competition fees.

Tax-deductible donations are still welcome, and the project has fostered a positive environment for many children, leading to significant cultural change and inspiring a passion for running.
