None of us could believe it when yet more storms hit last Friday morning with most of us were without power and off course varying levels of damage. As I write I believe some members are still without power. I know offers of generators, showers and assistance have gone out – thank you to all of you who have rallied round each other.

How to keep the cheeses, wine and cupcakes cool and fresh was a dilemma with the Cheese and Wine tasting event on the horizon for Cup Day evening. Alternative fridges had to be sourced. Seems that if your home is close to the Township and a Care Home that you are a higher priority, so I was able to offer assistance. Everything came together for a very successful event being held at the Nobelius Reserve. Well done Kris Ash, Gayle Barrot, Kelly McAllister and Sangeeta Bajaj – you incorporated a great mix of wines, cheeses, packaging, decorations and entertainment. The live horse race involving Ian Ash, Andrew McAllister and Aneesh was hilarious. Poor Aneesh couldn’t see out of his horse’s head, which was a real shame as I was backing him to win. I’m not a white wine drinker however the choice of two reds from Olinda Cellars – No.1 Nillahcootie Estate Cabernet Merlot 2015 and No.2 Gioello Syrah 2016 were good. If you do want to purchase these wines, Kris is coordinating a bulk purchase, so complete your forms and get them to Kris on Tuesday. All wines are being charged @ $15 per bottle.

A couple of days ago I forwarded information that DG Daryl Moran has circulated to all District Clubs on the Storm Recovery Festival on Sunday 27^th February, so just a reminder to put the date into your calendar as we will be suppling manpower. At this stage the Cluster clubs continue to meet every couple of weeks to decide how the RAWCS Appeal funds can be best used. Currently we favour a Storm Children’s book and a “Park” with nature walks, story bords and sculptures using the rescued wood. These projects are long term ones however the RAWCS storm appeal team are comfortable with that.

Next Tuesday we go back to live meetings at the Paradise Hotel. You do have to be double vaxed to use the pub however you can join us via the hybrid zoom link. John Shaw is introducing improvements to the experience so I will be following up with those of you who attend that way for your experience. We will have Mac Barrot from Gemco Theatre as Guest Speaker and John Ritchie is reintroducing our “Toast to the Elderly”. If the Cup Day event was anything to go by, then Tuesday is going to be very noisy as we all enjoy each other’s company. Can you please let Lorna know by Monday if you plan to attend the meeting. She will have to pre warn the pub so that they can work within the spacing rules and it may mean using the veranda instead of the back room.

Remembrance Day is 11th November. At 11am at the Cenotaph in town centre - not Anzac Place - the RSL will be holding a modest ceremony (due to Covid limitations). I will be laying a wreath on behalf of the Club. I am not sure how many people can attend, however if you were thinking of going along can you please let me know. As in previous years, the RSL will also be “planting” poppies around Emerald and in the 3 roundabouts in town to create an awareness of Remembrance Day and poppies will be on sale outside the Emerald Newsagency next week.

You are invited to hear Ambaree Majumder explain what ‘Saving the Oceans’ really means and how our perception of the oceans needs to change. Oceans are not just a seafood bank but a great friend of ours in our fight against Climate Change. Therefore, we must come together to save the oceans so that we can save ourselves.

Ambaree is a second-generation Rotarian and a member of the Marina City Rotary Club in Singapore. She is also the co-chair of the Plant-Rich Diet taskforce in the Rotary Action Group for Environmental Sustainability (ESRAG). She has spoken at various Rotary clubs around the world, corporate platforms, schools, and universities about how our plates and the planet are more interconnected than it might seem.

Based on science, she advocates that it is crucial for environmentally conscious citizens to be aware that the price of the food we eat is not just the money we pay to buy it, but there is also a price that our planet must pay. Therefore, every meal is an opportunity for us to fight a climate catastrophe knocking at humanity’s doorstep.
