John Ritchie – Toast to the Elderly - Norma Wilson

I was born in Alphington. As it was during the depression, my parents and I lived with my grandparents.

I have two sisters. One was born when I was 9 and my 2nd sister was born when I was 19. Infact my mother and I were pregnant at the same time. So my youngest sister is only a few months older than my son.

I went to Preston Girls school up until I was in form 3 aged 14.

 

I became a dress maker and got a apprenticeship after leaving the 3rd form at age 14. I would embryoid beads onto pockets. It was the in thing back then. I also worked in Flinders Lane in a clothing factory. I then eventually became a full time mother.

 

I met my husband Les at a dance in Heidelberg.. We had 4 children, As a seamstress I was always making clothes for people. I think sometimes my friends and family may of taken advantage of my skills.

I would take in two aboriginal children every weekend from Sutherland Homes. They would become part of the family for the weekend.

 

I would go camping but my husband did not like to go. He would drop me off with my 4 kids and my two children I took care of. We would all chip in and have a good time.

 

In my retirement my husband and I became members of the Diamond Valley Walking Club. We would go on hikes all around Victoria. I was also a member of the Heidelberg Probus with my two sister-in-laws.  It was mainly for the social aspect.

 

I am a chatter box. I have a good circle of friends who still keep in touch with me and have enjoyed meeting people here at Emerald Glades.

• Excited about coming out of COVID and exciting things coming up
• Loves the passion in the room
• Lives opposite the hotel – bought a house here 1.5 yrs ago and left NSW central coast to live here as met Cara here – wanting to establish an art business in Emerald.Paintings are view of top ridge down to the Paradise Valley Hotel etc.A picture was taken from the same spot in 1954
• Been involved with art for 30 yrs, has a commitment to youth
• Joined Arts Soc as secretary – President stepped down and now in the role
• EAS been around since 1969 lots of committees and changes, now at Anne Street
• John Dudley exhibition – still supported – felt the society needed to move forward – annual exhibition at the Hills Hub – taking it to the next level.That space needs to be celebrated – last weekend in Oct going for 5 days.Thank you for sponsorship and the local businesses for prize money
• Strong emphasis on the younger generation – they get prizes too accessible as in town
• Entry form on facebook and website
• Run a lot of classes something every day – life drawing and open studios etc – very busy
• Workshops – inviting artists from outside region to undertake workshops offering members and community more
• Connected to Youth Connect – students after school now engaged in art after school
• Brushstrokes and Bubbles – wine cheese and paint pictures – Kelly from the club approached Glenn to set this up.Very professional, came with costing sheet and pretty well sold out – 2 tickets left for the first one.EAS not charging Rotary Glenn facilitating the evening – model is handsome pants
• Taking the EAS to different places and looking for members
• Saving environment through art – working with Cardinia
• Mother was a poet and writer Pam Ayers (like her) illustrated her nursery rhymes then she wrote a novel.Mother passed away at 54 found the manuscript – wanted to write a book on artists – Artists of the Central Coast in their own words – interviewed them in their own words. 7 questions and answers and journeys were amazing – it was their story – had 41 interviews – took 6.5 yrs.Some of artists are international.
• Book Artists of the Central Coast in their own word – comes in a box – photographers and scultures as well – Cardinia team would like to do one in this area as well in due course

Committee Reports

• 18 Oct Generations Meeting at the Paradise Hotel – Probus and president and grade 4-6 children plan for night is a surprise – old things to go on table for decoration to show old things such as a scrub board etc can anyone please provide these to PP PHF Gayle Barrot
• Still collecting stamps – please provide to Gayle as well – goes towards saving children’s eye site
• Ride for Medical Research 19 – 24 March please support the event – John Shaw is taking part this year as well

• 3 markets to go before making a decision
• Kids theme this market – popcorn, games, colouring, police visiting
• Roster sign up please volunteer– get Market signs out
• Colin blade sharpener – offering services again, please bring knives etc for sharpening

• We have sent out the Real Estate brochure, signed off on the first year in Rotary guide, the Know Your Rotarian events are under way,
• We will have an evening in November to construct our own pitches on Rotary and we have arranged to speak to EDRA.
• We will be working with the Pride of Workmanship team and KFRWPBto leverage these events
• We will also be sending out advertisements to the schools with a listing of our guest speakers in the new year to invite parents to come along to a meeting

• Rotary Club hosting event on 5.30 – 6.30 online
• Electric vehicles Sunday Oct 23 – Rotary Club Manningham and Templestowe are showcasing electric cars
• The Aussie Bird Count will run 17 - 23 October during National Bird Week - register to count at https://aussiebirdcount.org.au
