What a windy, wild week this has been!  It’s a wonder we weren’t blown off the mountain!  We just have to keep reminding ourselves that Spring is on its way…just look at the beautiful wattle trees that are out in their glorious yellow fuzz at the moment.

The weather is a far cry from that which Cardinia Shire Mayor, Graeme Moore, encountered on his charity bike ride in Cambodia a few years ago!  There it was hot and humid.  His talk at our last meeting was really entertaining with lots of photos and fun anecdotes of the adventure.  Thanks to Kris and Ian Ash for arranging his visit to us.

This week is Committee Meetings followed by a Board Meeting.  I’m sure we shall hear some fabulous ideas from our committees for the next few months.  Sausage sizzles, movie nights, membership drives… I can hear them all now!!  :D
IMPORTANT!!

Please note that we are unable to meet at the current location after our meeting on the 20th August.  The pub has been sold and the new owners are doing renovations which will take at least 2 weeks.

27th August - Great Community Raffle Presentation at Ferntree Gully Holden

10th Sept    ZEST cafe in Emerald  (usual time)

We’re yet to clarify what will happen after that, but will of course, keep you all posted!!

Best wishes to those who are feeling under the weather and/or recovering from recent operations.  It’s certainly a good week to stay in bed!!

Until next time,

Hooroo for now

Toast to the Elderly

Thank you Peter for this month's Toast to the Elderly for Eileen Banyard

Eileen's story is typical of those who lived in London through the blitz in the 1940’s. In 1939, at aged 9, she was evacuated by coaches that came suddenly to her school. She did not know what was happening, and suddenly found herself placed with a family in Oakland, Rutland, the smallest county of the English Midlands, about 150 km from her parents.

She was quite devastated, and 3 weeks later her parents took her back to London , which was being repeatedly bombed at that time by the German air force. Whenever the sirens sounded, she and her friends hid under their school desks. One day, cycling to school she heard a low flying plane crash, and the blast gave her spinal injuries that created lameness through her life.

After working at a bank, she met at a 21st party and was married to Ronald in 1950, and they emigrated to Australia, living in Monbulk. They had two girls, Claire and Helen who went to local schools. Her husband was active in the Scout movement, while she ran a Brownie Group. They were very much  involved with their local community.

Being sociable, she adores discussion with other residents, and even when chatting she knits garments for premature babies and war torn children overseas. She delights in going on excursions, all are magic moments for her, and she is thankful for being mobile and able to enjoy life.

Guest Speaker - Mayor of Cardinia, Graeme Moore

We welcomed Mayor Graeme Moore who took us on a journey through Cambodia on his bike tracing his route raising funds for Windermere in 2013.  It was quite an adventure with a lot of hard peddling along the way!!  The group spent time at an orphanage for children whose family had been affected by HIV.  It was a life-changing experience and with than Graeme for sharing the video of the trip with us.

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free;

We've golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.

Conundrum Answer:

“Halfway.  Since we have no idea how large the woods are, the distance in actual measurement becomes irrelevant.  At the halfway point the dog will be running OUT of the woods!"
