• Passionate about school improvement
• Lot of the stuff we do is more like business modelling
• Has to get the team together, review, meet and analyse data – big part of life, in schools we put faces on the data
• Asked to apply for a state education award in school improvement – now an influence school
• We know more about the science of teaching – we do a lot to build staff capacity
• Metacognitively has a better and longer lasting teaching strategy
• We do professional learning with staff, and undertake learning walks and talks to ensure the children know and are using the same language it has hit the ground with the children as well
• Need to assess and teach in different ways in the classroom
• Creating community is really important to Emma, the PS can be a hub in the community, also about building the team and creating trust.
• What is an effective school/classroom/teacher/student etc.
• Remote learning – Emma has a set plan and kicks into this – learning packs, Webex’s, set timetables, ensuring families have devices, look at staff wellbeing,

Dr Dan runs the Medical Centre in Monbulk  since beginning of Pandemic, but has been part of the town for 12 years. He provided some information below on common childhood complaints.

 

Asthma

• Breathing – diaphragm – when we breathe out it is relaxed
• Asthma – bit of air and a bit comes out – that is called gas trapping – air gets stuck in the bottom of the lungs.They get distressed more they try to breathe the harder it gets.
• Most important thing with emergency
  • call 000
  • but also to try and keep calm andkeep the patient calm.
• Ventolin you need to time the inhalation – if someone is struggling Aero Chamber can assist with this.A spacer allows particles to aerosol and the child can just breathe in and out - so they don’t have to time the inhaling.
• Ventolin is safe when used correctly.

 

Allergy - Epi-Pen – contains Adrenalin

• Relatively safe medication
• If severe allergy the person may carry on
• Avoid the trigger eg peanuts
• Sounds like a seal when breathing on the way in
• Get patient to lie down or sit down
• Call 000 then help the patient
• Blue to the sky, orange to the outer thigh – hold in fist do not put thumb on the active part
• Into muscle because it lasts longer – thigh because you will avoid important structures and muscles
• Remove the safety blue – hold orange to the thigh for 10 seconds
• You can repeat the dose when waiting for help patient will often have 2 pens

Croup

• Starts with a little cough
• Will often sit upright and will struggle to breath and have the seal-like noise
• Call 000
• Child will get distressed – sensation someone is choking them, working harder to breathe
• Calm child down and turn on TV to distract etcCold dry air outside can assist with breathing, but distraction is the key
• Ages 1-8 tend to be affected

Defibrillator

• Life-saving equipment
• Kerry Packer – donated DeFib to ambulances
• Electrical shock across heart to reset electricity of the heart
• Automatic Electronic Defib – will only work if the rhythm can be fixed
• Time to Defib is actually critical in their outcome – more in the community now
• As a town ensure you know where they are!

Mental Health Emergencies

• Pass to someone who is skilled to deal with these emergencies
• Pushups for Mental Health being supported by Dr Dan
