Hello All Virtual Rotarians!
How good is technology?! Imagine the predicament clubs like Rotary would be in without the wonder of the internet, computers, mobile phones, communication programs etc etc. It’s nice to see it being used for good, instead of evil.
Thank you to all who were able to join the Rotary via Zoom meeting on Tuesday. We had a very good turnout of members, (about 23 I believe) including a few who were convinced it would be all too hard to figure out. A very special thanks to you for persevering and giving something new, and well out of our comfort zones, a try. A few technical glitches along the way, my internet dropped out briefly but the meeting was able to continue; a couple of double people apparently needing to use one device for sound, the other for video; John Ritchie could hear every word, but couldn’t respond; but overall, it seemed to work. A good way of keeping in touch for sure.
Sergeant Ken certainly didn’t let us down with the fine session! Rest assured there is an ongoing tally, so be sure and email or message the Sergeants (either David or Ken) any fines you may have throughout the weeks. Payment will be figured out at some point, but in the meantime it remains a great source of amusement as always!
During the meeting it was noted how wonderful our Sunshine Lady Lyn has been in ringing every member to say g’day and make sure we are all ok. She doesn’t like accolades, but I sincerely want to thank her for her kindness and thoughtfulness in doing this. Everyone appreciates it very much and we send her a big virtual kiss in thanks.
This coming week is the 5th Tuesday of the month and would normally be a social night of some kind. So I ask that everyone join our Rotary PYJAMA PARTY Zoom Meeting!! Come in your pj’s, dressing gowns and slippers; onesies or none-sies….ok, well, maybe not the none-sies!! (Remember there’s a video aspect! LOL!) Bring your hot chocolate, Irish Coffee, night cap or whatever tipple tickles your fancy ready for the Rotary toast. No doubt there will be fun and games involved in the night!
As more and more facilities, shops, businesses and social opportunities are closed down, it will become even more important for us to stay connected to each other in creative ways. Technology will play a huge part in this. If you can and haven’t already, I suggest you download Zoom onto your computer and/or your phone so you can use it to connect with family and friends, as well as Rotary. The free version is more than suitable for catch ups and really easy to use. I’ve literally just had a coffee with a friend working from home in Chelsea…10 minute catch up, just like being in the break room at work!
Some ideas for social activities that club members have suggested to me so far are:
online games
small group dinners
coffee dates
card nights
book club
cocktails/quarantinis
poetry reading
virtual travel nights (think retro slide nights revamped!)
Any other suggestions gratefully received.
Our very own roving Rotarian, Peter Brock, has sent a wonderful account of his experiences so far in Singapore. Please read the attached newsy letter from him. Hopefully he will be able to join one of our meetings in the not too distant future. Geographical distance is no longer an issue. :)
