Many thanks to Charles Kovess for so patiently working through the difficulties of our venue and nevertheless providing us all with some thought provoking messages. Charles spent time posing questions, exploring a different way of thinking.
He told the story of his parents emigrating to Australia in 1949 in the pursuit of Freedom and asked us the question, what would you give your life for? Freedom, your children?
The elders of Stanford Graduate Business School deliberated the essential capabilities of great leaders a suggested self awareness was the key. You need self awareness to understand your values and what you would give your life for.
Charles went on to ask further questions - what is the point of what you are doing, what constitutes a good life? What is success? We are fortunate to have the freedom to make decisions that help us understand these questions and pursue a life that has meaning for us.
We were asked if we had heard of Earl Nightingale and his concept of 'The Strangest Secret' - that you become what you think about most of the time. Your life is a function of what you think therefore it is salient to guard your thoughts!
A definition of success is 'The progressive realisation of a worthy ideal'. What is a worthy ideal? Do what you are passionate about. Passion liberates energy from your soul. What are you passionate about? Give yourself permission to pursue your passion, don't get caught up in the game, the constraints put upon us.
Is a good life about lots of money or trying to be safe?
The Book 'The Prophet' by Kahil Gibran was referenced with a quote “The lust for comfort kills the passions of the soul.” So do we choose comfort or a worthy life. Passion are reason are needed, the sales and the rudder of your seafaring soul.
Much to think about! More questions than answers but an amazing short journey of discovery for us all. Thank you Charles for giving of your time and knowledge.
