Dear Everyone,
Last Tuesday night’s meeting over Zoom was enjoyable I thought, with a fair amount of jocularity before the formalities started and during Sergeant Gayle’s Fines session. Kris’s well-researched presentation and attractive graphics on “Wellbeing As We Age” was very well-received, and grabbed our attention by looking at places around the world noted for the longevity of its inhabitants and the Japanese concept of Ikigai. Iki means “life” and “gai” is “the realisation of what one expects and hopes for”. Towards the end, Kris gave a list of attitudes and practices that we need to incorporate into our lives to help us live healthily for a long time and achieve fulfillment. And being a member of Rotary certainly helps.
Marcus’s “Know Your Rotarian” segment was very entertaining and it sounds like he had a rip-roaring time with his fellow Rotaractors: the cricket match between the Rotaractors and the Emerald Rotary Club members, for example, was brought up and highlighted some hilarious moments.
It was very pleasing to note that a healthy percentage of our members attended the District Training Assembly which finished up after eight days last Sunday. I would like to touch on the Public Image, Marketing and Communication workshop that a few of us attended on Saturday afternoon, led by Peter Behm from the Noble Park Dingley Club. Peter thanked Ken, the current District Chair of Public Image, whom he is replacing when Ken assumes the role of DGE in July. The workshop reinforced messages from the May edition of the Zone 8 Public Image Newsletter.
We need to correctly and consistently use the Rotary brand and logo because that practice has contributed “to the success of most, if not all, large multinational organisations,” which “religiously protect their brand, and always display a consistent logo. A strong brand promotes trust, reliability and dependability, and the key to establishing the desired relationship with their customers is the clarity and consistency of the organisation’s message” says outgoing Rotary Public Image Coordinator (RPIC) for Zone 8, PDG Gina Growden. In the same edition of the newsletter, Evan Burrell Assistant Public Image Coordinator said, “As people develop shorter and shorter attention spans, building brand awareness around Rotary is going to become even more important to the success of your club.” Some have suggested that we wear our Rotary polo shirts and windcheaters not only when we’re at a Rotary event, but to the supermarket and when out dog-walking. And why not? – I do at times. It’s a good way of consolidating the brand awareness that we have recently achieved, thanks to the dedication and hard work of Ros, Kris and Ian, during our R100 celebrations.
Peter Behm recirculated this page from the newsletter and I have asked Kris to reprint it here as it offers a clear explanation of how to be Rotary compliant, which all Clubs need to be to achieve our aim. I think we do comply, but as we order new materials for marketing, we need to have this knowledge at our fingertips.
