Dr Paul Wood was our speaker last week. Dr Wood is an Oncologist at Monash Children's Hospital's Cancer Centre. The hospital is the 2nd largest paediatric hospital in Victoria and has an increased demand along with increased population through the growth corridor of Casey and Cardinia.
The Centre provides medical and surgical facilities as well as paediatric intensive care but also delivers the concept of a
hospital in the home so children can be assisted in their home environment. It has a Radiology Department with a new MRI scanner.
The Children’s Cancer Centre focuses on day oncology with 13 beds and also has a dedicated theatre that is kid friendly.
HEPA filtered beds for those with reduced immune systems help to provide state of the art care.
Childhood Leukaemia and hard tumours – cure rate 80%
Childhood Leukaemia 95% cure rate
Dr Wood's research looks at Neuroblastoma and is particularly
researching a low-dose medication that can be administered over 9 weeks orally at home – good results in Phase 1 trials has lead to funding via the NH&MRC grants body for Phase 2 trials. It is hoped this new drug will promote tumors to become non aggressive and benign.
Service delivery is important too and the team provides an holistic and family centered approach to monitoring complex patient needs.
Fellows train for 3-4 yrs and we are delighted fundraiser for the amazing work the team are undertaking.
