Gembrook RSL Anzac Day Appeal
- Gembrook RSL since 1964 – proud history
- Told us about the RSL – a good venue to attend
- People in the area who have gone through a lot and need our support and funds to assist them.
- Raffle fundraiser at the moment – 18 businesses from Emerald helped them and the community support has been overwhelming
$5000 target main raffle plus a mini draw on Anzac Day
Trevor Budge – Vic Gold Fields Work Heritage
40 years ago Trevor went on a Rotary exchange visit in Nuremburg and it was a life-changing experience. Trevor saw the advantage of immersing self into society – went to a nuclear power plant. At the time there was a wall between E and W Germany – was by the line between E and W. It was also not long after the Second WW and it was an interesting experience being there at that time. He went on to run study tours in America, especially in town planning as a result of seeing the advantage of going and spending time in a society.
Was involved in the recovery of Sri Lanka post the Boxing Day Tsumami. Train south of Colombo 1000 died – first wave they survived, second wave went over the top of them. Only 6/1000 survived. Aus Aid and Red Cross funding was used to support the area.
Vic Gold Field World Heritage
- 20 World Heritage sites in Australia 1195 sites around the world.
- Something the world through UNESCO decides is worth keeping 2/3 are cultural eg Taj Mahal.1/3 are natural heritage.
- 20 sites 16 are natural heritage – eg Great Barrier Reef.
- Started on project in 1988 (John Brumby was local member for Bendigo) suggested the Gold Fields should be world heritage recognised.
- Half of Vic has gold mines, even here in Emerald.
- Serial Listing – the totality of sites will tell the whole story so need to be protected
- Looking at 12 sites across Vic that will tell the story including Castlemaine/Goulburn
- What is the outstanding universal value of the Vic Gold Fields
- Australia a dry continent so saved a lot of things and we built with brick and stone not timber, so our heritage has survived
- You have to list the attributes of the heritage – Vic only place in the world to have all 6
- Alluvial Gold
- Quartz mining – Bendigo had the worlds biggest mines
- Deep creek minin – volcanoes covered the creeks
- Open cut mining – Rushworth – best eg in AU
- Hydraulic sluicing - washing it out – but this destroys the landscape
- Horizontal boring
- AU Gov has been supportive – state budget $2m to the project – 15 councils involved
- Need to document the case and why it is important
- Will submit application to UNESCO – 3 to 4 years off being listed
- Why?
- Heritage is important – it tells and protects the history of Australia
- Huge implication for tourism especially from overseas – could double tourists coming to Victoria

Train of Lights – PHF John Henderson
- This year 25-night sausage sizzle marathon
- Puffing Billy railway are extending Train of Lights by a week
- Thurs 27th June (trial run) we will get around 50 tickets allocated
- Runs all the way through to Sunday 21 July
- 6-8 people per night 200 slots to fill, 45 members looking for those who are willing to take part to do 4-6 nights each would be amazing and help spread the load around the club members.
