Although we could not get internet access to be able to demonstrate our wonderful new website (stay tuned as some creative alternatives are being discussed), we were treated to a rare (once every 20 years) talk by the “Grand Patriarch” of the Club, John Ritchie. Everyone enjoyed John’s talk and will likely be dining out for years to come on Brazil nuts and oysters on account of their excellent selenium content. Mind you a few of us were left wondering whether this diet contributed to John’s personal situation (three wives and plenty of chicks!).
On Tuesday we will be at Gembrook Primary School for the speech contest that Glorious and her team have put so much time and effort into. Not only will this be an enjoyable and entertaining evening, we will also be joined by Brad Battin (state MP for somewhere beginning with G), deputy Mayor Brett Owen, councillors Leticia Wilmot and Jeff Springfield, DG Elect Shia Smart and our resident AG Graeme Aspinall, so please make sure you don’t miss it.

Last Week's Meeting
We welcomed visitors John Koenders and it was lovely to see Linc Reed-Nickerson, past member who is now a member of the Rotary Club of Darmascotta-Newcastle in the USA.

John lost his larynx 24 years ago and has been communicating by way of a valve - standing up and delivering a speech to the club showed great strength of character.
John joined Rotary in 1986 and has been a member of both the Rotary Club of Dandenong Central and Emerald and District Inc in that time.
John's life took him from living in Dixon's Creek for 11 years to Kilsyth for 12 years. He went to Box Hill Technical College and Swinburne where he was awarded a Diploma in Applied Chemistry. He did a stint of National Service, worked for Commonwealth Aircraft and then became a Bio-Chemist at the Nicholas Institute and then became a Nutritionist. He moved into chicken farming initially part-time in North Ringwood then full time in Hallam, Nar Nar Goon and Nangana where he now lives. He was married 3 times and has 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

John's tip - eat 3 Brazil nuts a day to provide you with your selenium daily requirement (it helps stop heart attacks). In addition 6 oysters a day will provide you with your zinc requirement.

We had a thank you from the organiser of the used stamp appeal, Carrol - since 1991 the stamp account has raised $115,992 which is an amazing effort from donations of used stamps. In the last couple of years funds have been going to the End Trachoma project.
Halloween Get Together
Thank you PHF Catherine Elfick for organising a Halloween party on Saturday 27 October at your house - 55 Macclesfield Road, Emerald. A list circulated at the meeting this evening but if anyone would like to attend who wasn't at the meeting can you let Catherine know asap.
Please bring your own tipple, some Halloween-centric food, dress up (or no entry apparently) and if you want to bring along a hollowed out, designer pumpkin for a fun competition :)
John Henderson pointed out at the meeting there were only 40 sleeps to go until the Kids Fun Run With Thomas. 150 children have registered, 108 fundraising pages have been created and $2,375 raised by the children so far. John mentioned the school road trip, but he under-sold how much hard work it is. Shalini kindly shared some of the photographs from this week - a great effort by all who helped out - PP PHF Tina McInerney, John Henderson, Salini Penny and Arti Seewald. You are doing an amazing job guys, going to school assemblies is a really terrific new initiative :)
