Susi Wilson McLeod Murphy Presentations
All 5 have successfully applied for the MacLeod Murphy presentation – studying medical courses in the hills.
Dr ‘Spud’ MacLeod Murphy was very well liked in the hills. He came to Emerald after a career in the Navy and as a doctor. He retired to the hills and bred turkeys in 1944 but soon realised there wasn’t a doctor so came out of retirement and practised for another 37 years until his death in 1981. He as a generous man who often didn’t charge his patients or accepted food as a payment. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for his devotion to the health of the community.
The MacLeod Murphy Scholarship was established n 1981 out of donations from the local community. In his memory awards are provided each year to assist students living locally who wish to take up a medical profession.
This year the money comes not only from the MacLeod Murphy Trust fund but from local business sponsorship and we acknowledge the funds from the Rotary Club of Emerald itself, Avonsleigh Vet, Emerald Medical Centre, Emerald Pharmacy and the Hills Psychology. We are therefore pleased to present 5 awards of $1000 each.
- Talia Rossito – 18 years old and finished her VCE in 2022.She started to study psychology at Federation Uni in Berwick and is now studying pharmacy and is working at the Emerald Village Pharmacy it is a delight to work with Talia.
- Shae Jones – her family has lived in the hills for a number of years and Dr Murpy was actually her grandfather’s doctor!She completed a Science Degree at Monash and is now studying a Postgrad Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy at the Parkville Campus
- Vanessa Dewar – completed her VCE at Emerald Secondary. College last year she was also awarded the Rotary Citizenship award for outstanding service in the community.She was school captain and has volunteered in the primary school mentoring program.She started a Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery at Frankston this year.
- Lillian Mackay – Has lived in Emerald for over 17 years. She finished a Diploma of Nursing in 2021 and is now studying a Bachelor of Paramedicine at the Monash Peninsula Campus and is working at Emerald Medical Centre as a receptionist
- Ruby Mulloy-Koning – Has completed a Nursing course at Monash and now studying a Bachelor in Paramedicine and had an interest in paramedicine after her mother had accident that crushed her leg and paramedics had to be called.

PP PHF John Ritchie - Toast to the Elderly – Brian Passmore
I had the most idyllic wonderful childhood growing up in Kogarah Bay near Botany Bay. My mum came from a wealthy family and never had to work so she could follow her passion for dancing. My dad started off acting in stage shows until the depression hit then he worked as a labourer and finally became a builder. I spent my free time swimming, fishing ,sailing exploring the bush & going for long hikes. I enjoyed running and started off as a sprinter in school competitions but then moved onto long distance running. I was a goody two shoes and never got into trouble at school and stayed until year 11 and then went to University to study metallurgy and then changed to Chemistry.
My first job after finishing university was at a gold refinery as an industrial chemist. I found this area of work was only about the money to be made with no care given for safety standards or workers conditions and I couldn't face working in this field so i soon left and became a Secondary teacher where i met my second wife Del.
I indulged my love of entertaining around the age of 30 & was "a headliner" of amateur performances singing acting and entertaining. I was a great long distance runner and state level tennis player.
I can do many things well as I don't take on anything new without learning how to do it properly. I even learnt how to build my own home by hand. I am a born leader and have sat on & chaired many committees including the Teachers federation plus many more. All my life i have enjoyed a challenge and then I will do it to the very best standards.
After 43 years of teaching i retired in 2000. We then bought a beautiful 7-acre property in Batemans Bay. It was here I built a house where we ran a bed & breakfast business for many happy years. Once this was too much for both of us, I asked Del what she would like to do as I felt i had achieved all I had set out to do in my life. Del wanted to move back to Emerald Victoria where she was from. We bought a beautiful property and were very happy. Moving Into Emerald Glades, I will continue to live out my life keeping busy and living life to the full.
Behind the Badge – Greg Adams
Greg studied Accountancy at Swinburne Uni and is married to wife Irene.
Greg took us on a longggg journey through is life touching on the his early swimming lessons, his time in the boy scouts, playing the electronic organ at Bashers and making a few sales along the way!
He met his wife, Irene in Diamond Creek and trained greyhounds – at one time having 300 of them and a top dog that was the equivalent of Phar Lap in the horse world.
He took us through the the lives of his children, told about his love of the Collingwood AFL team and his love of cars ranging from Alfa Romeos to Ferraris.
His family purchased Scotts Brass Works and turned this into a successful business also purchasing Adcast Consolidating turning this into a $6m company with 33 employees. Greg and his brother took over the business from his mum and dad and continued the success of the foundry work.
Later in life he and his wife owned large kennels and a cattery at Diamond Creek.
Greg loves boats, fishing and scuba diving – all with a pacemaker!!
He joined the RC of Diamond Creek and moved to our club a few years ago. He is heavily involved with RYLA and at the district level, helping with conferences and was secretary of the district at one point.
He has taken up Ray and June’s passion to support the Tenderfoot school in Kenya (our club continues to support the school and has in the past purchased two buses for the school).
Greg loves travelling and is a proud owner of a motor home.
Committee Reports
- PR and Marketing – don’t forget the 20th May is the Community Expo at The Hub so come along and have a look.We are fielding a team at the Trivia Night – thanks guys for the generous support in volunteering for the expo and the trivia team.
- Roster is all good for the market and we have a trailer!
- Red Shield Appeal 20th May from 8.30 – 1pm tin shaking will take place outside the Emerald Village Bakery.

- MacLeod Murphy Award idea to get sponsors was Hita’s idea – it is good to see a new members come on board with good ideas.The students would be pleased to have won the award.
- Pride of Workmanship Award was a winner too the other week so well done to the Vocational Committee this year
- Ray and June Adams did a lot for the club and nice to have Greg in the club now as well
- DG Ken we are always glad when you can make time to be at the club meetings
- Nice to see Rowan and Linda here again and we hope to see you at the meeting next week

- Nossal High School is a select entry school for Years 9 to 12
- there is a meeting at Nossal next Tuesday for dinner to discuss forming an Interact Club
- the two clubs will be able to do various projects together

RYLA Information - anyone know a good candidate for this wonderful opportunity?
When: RYLA 2023 will be held this year from the 26th June to 1st July in Flinders on the Peninsula
What: RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, is an intensive leadership experience sponsored by Rotary Clubs. It is a challenging 6-day programme which provides a unique opportunity for young adults with proven leadership experience and potential leaders from diverse backgrounds a unique opportunity to learn new leadership skills, grow personally, have fun, and make new connections.
Developed primarily for young people between the ages of 18 and 30 it focuses on personal and leadership development. It assists them to become aware of their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivation, to understand the basics of leadership, work in a team environment and to apply this knowledge to develop their leadership capabilities.
Whether a student or young professional, RYLA provides experience and prepares young people to be leaders in their community, profession, and other facets of everyday life. Participants hear from a variety of leaders within the business community including Company CEO’s, entrepreneurs, professional speakers and young leaders.
Why: All of this helps to develop the Leaders of Tomorrow, global citizens, a new generation of professional leaders and our potential future Rotarians.
Cost: As expected rising costs have impacted us, however the effect RYLA has on the lives of our young participants is no less diminished. Young people are needing our support even more than ever.
This year’s 6-day live in camp will be $1,250 per participant and $1000 for a leader.
